新型コロナウイルス感染症は感染症法上では５類感染症に移行し、我々はコロナ禍前の日常を取り戻しつつある。しかし小児科領域では人流抑制のリバウンドによると考えられる様々な感染症の流行が見られている。人類を含む生物の進化の歴史はウイルスとの戦いの歴史でもあり、我々はこれからも既存の、あるいは未知のウイルスとの終わりなき戦いを続けることになる。このような状況の中で、ウイルス感染症と小児神経学の関係を改めて見つめ直す必要があると考え、このシンポジウムを企画した。新型コロナウイルス感染症は我々に様々な教訓を残したが、その一つとして感染状況に関する迅速かつ正確な情報を得ることの重要性が再認識された。その情報の源はサーベイランス事業であり、小児神経科医も届出が必要な感染症等を熟知していなければならない。また中枢神経系の感染症は発生数が少なくても医療者や社会に大きな影響をもたらすので、その潜在的なリスクも考慮した対策が必要である。小児神経の臨床において欠かすことのできない感染症について知識を整理するとともに、その対策について理解を深めることができれば幸いである。
