Thallium bromide (TlBr) is a promising compound semiconductor for the construction of radiation sensors. Due to its high atomic numbers (81 and 35) and high density (7.56 g/cm3), TlBr exhibits high photon stopping power. TlBr crystals were grown by the traveling molten zone method using zone-purified materials. TlBr sensors were fabricated from the crystals. A gamma-ray spectrum of uranite was obtained with the TlBr detector at room temperature.
