Dehydrogenation of isopentane (2-methylbutane) was performed over PtSn/MgAl2O4 catalysts in the presence of steam. First, to optimize the Sn/Pt ratio, the PtSn/MgAl2O4 catalysts having Sn/Pt = 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 were prepared. Among the prepared five catalysts, the catalyst having PtSn = 4 showed the highest catalytic activity. The major products were isoamylenes (2-methylbutenes), and high selectivity to isoprene was also obtained. The catalysts modified with Sn showed high total selectivity to isoamylenes and isoprene, but deactivation was clearly observed during the dehydrogenation.
