[A04]New Synthesis of Diethyl Carbonate (DEC) from CO2 and alkoxysilanes using Zr catalysts

The new sustainable synthesis of DEC from CO2 and alkoxysilanes has been developed. Using Zr(OEt)4 catalyst, TON reached 43 for the synthesis of DEC from CO2 and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with ~50% maximum yield of DEC. The 20-time-larger scale is comparable to that of the corresponding small one (~50%) suggesting the potential application of our synthetic approach in industry. The disiloxane byproduct can be reverted to TEOS using ethanol and molecular sieves (MS) as dehydrating agent. The evidence that the disiloxane byproduct is regenerable offers a new promising direction for the development of waste-free synthesis of DEC.
