21世紀に入り20年を経たが、油価は変動し、中東・OPEC原油に加え、超重質油・大水深油田開発・シェールオイルほかが石油市場に登場した。一方、残存可採埋蔵量や産油量は徐々ながら共に増加基調にあり、石油の寿命（残存可採埋蔵量/年供給量）は、あと40年～50年のレンジに落ち着いている。「可採埋蔵量と油価の関係」を石油採掘技術やエネルギー経済の面から探りたい。
