Sugar dehydration into furanic compounds represent an attractive alternative way to produce renewable-derived monomers for plastics production. Selective sugar dehydration can be achieved by utilizing solid catalysts possessing acid and base active sites. Fine tuning and balance between acid and base properties of the catalyst is therefore the key for selective dehydration of sugar to the target product. Alkaline earth titanate mixed metal oxides possess highly tuneable acid-base properties, representing an attractive class of materials. Here we investigate how tuning those properties, by controlling parameters such as elemental composition, crystallinity and surface dopants, can be exploit for biomass conversion.
