A catalyst for the degradation of PP in a n-C16 solvent was investigated for the practical application of chemical recycling of plastic wastes back to the petrochemical component hydrocarbons. Beta zeolite was selected as a catalyst that could selectively degrade PP to its petrochemical components, and in addition, alkaline treatment, a technique known to form mesopores in zeolite and increase its external surface area, was also employed. These catalysts were used in activity tests. The results showed a positive correlation between PP degradation and the acid amount and external surface area of the catalysts.
