A new methodology for deriving effective energy-saving modification of refinery and petrochemical plants, “HERO”, was developed, which simultaneously optimizes both process systems and utility systems. In contrast to conventional approaches, which consist of some partial optimizations, HERO comprehensively optimizes the entire plant with a large-scale unified mathematical model. Thus, HERO can pursue further energy saving beyond the conventional limit. Indeed, in the studies for commercial plants, modification plans with attractive economics were obtained.
