The orthotropic steel deck (OSD) is used in long-span bridges because of its high capacity-to-weight ratio. However, root-deck cracks have been found in OSD bridges in Japan and overseas. Using the effective notch stress on a finite element model, the stresses between a 12-mm and 16-mm deck were compared. Various thicknesses of pavement were also considered. The model was validated by sensitivity analysis and strain data. It was concluded that using a 16-mm steel deck improves the stress condition. However, if a 12-mm steel deck was already constructed, the use of an SFRC reduces the stress.
