Combination of cryo-electron microscopy and genetics for studying eukaryotic cellular structures

In 2017, the three pioneers of cryo-EM were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Nowadays, supramolecular structures solved by single particle analysis of cryo-EM dominate scientific headlines in high-impact journals. Thus far, whether crystalized or not has been a key of structure determination. Cryo-EM conquered such a common sense. It unveils the molecular mechanism and dynamics of molecular machineries such as supramolecular complexes and huge membrane proteins. Furthermore, tomography technology has enabled structure determination of molecules in cells. We can even expect drug design based on the structures solved by cryo-EM in the near future. In this symposium, we will discuss the dynamic mechanisms of supramolecular complexes revealed by cryo-EM with worldwide attention based on the recent findings in the field.
