Molecular mechanisms of antiviral defence by archaeal CRISPR-Cmr systems

When an unique repeated sequence of 29 bases with a regular length of intervals on was found in the E. coli genome 30 years ago, its biological function was not predicted at all, and it did not draw attention. Through accumulation of genomic information, the repeated sequence was was expected to be responsible for biological defense, and subsequently this hypothesis was experimentally proved. These progresses, with a nice naming, crispr, made the repeated sequences famous rapidly. These research progresses made the repeated sequences famous with the nice name to hear, Crisper. When the mechanism of action for this defense system was elucidated, it has been applied to techniques for specifically cleaving the target site in the genome, and this technique is rapidly spreading as a practical genome editing manipulation now. In this symposium, we would like to introduce the latest information on molecular biology of CRISPR, from its origin to the diversity of the molecular mechanisms based on its structure-function analysis, and the development of various methods based on its characteristics. We also would like to show the future prospects of this research field with discussing the possibilities of further applications.
