Molecular and biophysical mechanisms of substrate rigidity sensing that determines cell fate

In order to understand the shape of living organisms and their deformation (growth), it is essential to elucidate the functions of force and the mechanisms of response to force in cells, tissues, and organs. To that end, bottom-up studies that unravel the mechanism of cellular response to changes in microphysical environments by assembling elements such as genes and molecules are required. Just as importantly, top-down studies that take into consideration restrictions imposed by physical laws on the shape of living organisms are also necessary. In this symposium, we will discuss the diversity and commonality of the functions of force and response mechanisms in animals and plants, where the dynamic range of force to be faced is greatly different.
