FEM analysis was conducted to investigate the joint effects of the pile group spacing and the bearing layer thickness on the behavior of a pile group. In particular, the pile group is supported by a thin bearing layer composed of dense sand, which is underlain by clay. It was found that for very thin bearing layers and for sufficiently thick bearing layers, the load is more evenly distributed among the piles as the thin bearing layer permits uneven settlement and the thick bearing layer provides sufficient end bearing resistance.
