In the UK, future fusion energy facilities will be regulated under the legal framework already in place for fusion, with the safety regulation policy based on radiation risk analysis reported via the European ‘SEAFP’ and ‘PPCS’ programmes during the period 1995-2005. This presentation summarises the results of these radiation risk studies (potential environmental impact) and compares them with risk tolerance curves used in nuclear facilities and other facilities (ICRP and UK regulations). Consideration is given to the conservatism associated with the various concept fusion power plant designs used, and how design uncertainties may have evolved since the studies were conducted.
