[2A12]Viscosity and Cesium Stabilization Evaluation of Geopolymers with Various Compositions

Geopolymer is an alkali-activated material emerging as an alternative binder for decommissioning waste from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, for its lower carbon dioxide emissions and ability to immobilize radionuclides. The practicality of using geopolymer on-site relies on its workability. Depending on the precursors used, the geopolymers may have different compositions of alumina, silica, and even calcium. The effect of geopolymer compositions on workability and cesium immobilization efficiency is evaluated in this study. Aluminosilicate precursors were made and mixed with sodium or potassium activator to produce geopolymers with varied Al2O3/SiO2, CaO/SiO2, and Na2O/SiO2 or K2O/SiO2 ratios. The workability was evaluated in the form of viscosity, while immobilization efficiency was evaluated by a 24-hour leaching test.
