To clarify the factors affecting the microstructure and hydraulic conductivity of compacted bentonite, this study investigated the basal spacing of montmorillonite under varying conditions of ionic strength, dry density, and accessory mineral presence. Compacted bentonite and purified montmorillonite saturated with either deionized water or NaCl solutions were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the basal spacings of montmorillonite were determined through profile fitting with NEWMOD software. Interlayer and other porosities were estimated based on the basal spacings, and hydraulic conductivities were predicted by modeling parallel water flow through interlayer pores and applying the Kozeny-Carman equation to the remaining porosity.
