2本鎖DNAのT–Tミスマッチ塩基対にHg²⁺が特異的に結合し、C–Cミスマッチ塩基対にAg⁺が特異的に結合することを見出している。本研究は、これらのミスマッチ塩基対と金属イオンの特異的結合を用いて一塩基多型(SNP)を検出する方法を開発した。
