The Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change (AIMEC), established in 2024, is a new research institute jointly hosted by Tohoku University and JAMSTEC. Its mission is to elucidate the mechanisms by which marine ecosystems respond to and adapt to changes in oceanic conditions resulting from global environmental change, and to enable projections about the future of these ecosystems. To fulfil this mission, three research clusters have been formed: Open Ocean, Coastal Ocean and Planetary Stewardship. Each cluster is guided by specific overarching research questions. The Planetary Stewardship cluster focuses on acquiring scientific knowledge to promote sound societal decision-making. To this end, AIMEC plans to develop a marine digital twin centred on the Sanriku coast. This project aims to solve real-world problems by providing numerical model-based and AI-assisted projections for coastal and open ocean environments, and by communicating with stakeholders in local governments, the fisheries industry and others. It is expected to become a flagship project of Cluster #3. This presentation will provide an overview of AIMEC and its digital twin project, presenting initial results.
