[8uJbD0lg-03]From simulation to decision: a particle-based DTO application for dispersal and connectivity of marine tracers in present and future scenarios
*Sofia Bosi1 (1. Insitute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) of the National Research Council of it (CNR) (Italy))
Marine plastic, oil spills, chemical pollutants, fish eggs and larvae all have something in common: their dispersal in the ocean can be simulated using Lagrangian particle-tracking algorithms. Understanding how these tracers propagate through marine environments is a common challenge that underpins a wide range of decision-making processes, from marine spatial planning to the assessment of anthropogenic pressures. Digital Twin of the Ocean applications constitute a promising avenue in this direction. However, existing modelling approaches often target technical users, failing to reach marine planners, decision-makers and other non-technical stakeholders.
PMAR (Particle-based modelling and analysis for MARine decision support), is a user-centred, portable, and interoperable digital-twin application nested in the CNR-ISMAR Tools4MSP portfolio. It provides spatially explicit indicators for decision support and an intuitive graphical user interface, making advanced marine modelling accessible to non-technical users. By translating human activities to spatial sources, PMAR simulates the transport and accumulation of tracers across marine regions using Lagrangian trajectories. The lightweight exploration of alternative future states and planning scenarios is enabled by capitalizing on connectivity matrices as Markov-chains, allowing users to evaluate the potential effects of climate-driven changes in ocean circulation combined with different management strategies.
Fully open source, containerized, and currently deployed within the EDITO DataLab ecosystem, the application provides direct access to core European marine data-lakes, using Copernicus Marine oceanographic and atmospheric products to drive particle transport and EMODnet datasets to characterize the spatial distribution of human activities and other source layers. PMAR exposes on-demand processing capabilities through API specifications compliant with OGC API – Processes, enabling access to analytical functionalities and allowing external applications and services to seamlessly invoke and integrate processing workflows.
As an interoperable, user-centred and open-source Digital Twin application, PMAR aims to translate model outputs into practical and accessible indicators, empowering stakeholders to make science-based decisions across sectors.
