The Mediterranean Sea provides a unique "miniature laboratory" for Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs), where climate change, extreme events, and human pressures intersect with vulnerable ecosystems and socioeconomically vital activities, challenging marine protection, coastal resilience and a sustainable Blue Economy. Addressing these challenges requires transforming observations and models into user-centred solutions that turn complex science into actionable knowledge for real-world decisions. DTOs offer this potential, yet translating technological capabilities into fit-for-purpose, sustained regional services remains challenging.
Within the SOCIB2030 strategic framework, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) is developing MeDITTO (Mediterranean Digital Twins of the Ocean), a regional prototype DTO ecosystem integrating multi-platform observations, numerical models, what-if-scenarios (WiS), artificial intelligence and environmental indicators. Working backwards from user needs through co-design, MeDITTO is designed to translate shared capabilities into cross-sector decision-support services. A conversational interface is being developed to provide natural-language access to scientific evidence, data, models and scenarios, complemented by interactive maps and visualisations tailored to user expertise.
We present three complementary prototypes progressing from situational awareness ("What now?") to prediction ("What next?") and scenario exploration ("What if?"). MeDITTO-PROTECT integrates near-real-time and historical observations, models and indicators to support monitoring and adaptive management of marine protected areas, demonstrated in Cabrera National Park. MeDITTO-ALERT combines real-time met-ocean observations and numerical modelling for meteotsunami forecasting and early warning in Ciutadella Harbour. Finally, MeDITTO-ADAPT integrates observations, climate projections and predefined WiS to assess coastal flooding and erosion and explore adaptation strategies at Cala Millor.
Together, they illustrate the framework through which MeDITTO aims to serve diverse users, sectors and decision timescales within a shared regional DTO ecosystem. MeDITTO explores a transferable pathway from co-designed prototypes towards sustained operational services, with interoperability and continuous user validation guiding their progressive development and future integration into European and global DTO initiatives.
