Synthetic biology has increasingly focused on engineering naturally derived single-specie biofilms as functional living materials. However, these systems face inherent challenges, particularly in controlling macroscopic geometry, spatial patterning, and species diversity. In this talk, we will present our recent work in functional material fabrication by engineered microbial consortia. By exploiting cell-material feedback. We are able to design a macroscopic living film with controllable physical structure and programmable biological functions, enabling a series of downstream applications.
