Ecological communities display striking diversity and complex dynamics. Yet how diversity, stability, and invasibility emerge remains a central challenge in ecology. By bridging theory and experiment, we show that these properties are governed by simple community-level features. As species richness or interaction strength increases, microbial ecosystems transition from stable full coexistence to partial coexistence, and then to persistent fluctuations and multistability. High diversity and dynamical fluctuations reinforce one another, and a single community can harbor multiple attractors, including both stable and fluctuating states. Varying environmental conditions can lead to qualitatively different diversity-stability relationship. We also show that fluctuating communities tend to be both more diverse and more invasible, yielding a positive diversity–invasibility relationship. At the same time, stronger interactions and larger species pools reduce the probability of invasion. We reconcile the diversity–invasibility debate by showing that invasibility is universally linked to the survival fraction of resident species. Strong interactions generate an emergent priority effect that makes invader establishment less likely. Together, our results reveal general principles governing diversity, stability, and invasion in ecological communities.
