[1ASPR-21]Introduction: Artificial Phages from De Novo Peptide Design

The engineering applications of bacteria, viruses, and bacteriophages are advancing across diverse fields—including antimicrobial therapies and treatments for alcohol‑related liver disease. However, many of these efforts still rely on existing biological systems, and research competition is intensifying in the development of purely artificial bacteriophage‑like or virus‑like systems. In this session, we will invite three researchers to discuss studies aimed at creating non‑viral artificial phages and gene‑delivery systems by de novo designing self‑assembling peptide sequences and incorporating new functionalities—such as binding to target proteins on the cell surface—through evolutionary or rational design approaches. We hope to deepen the discussion following presentations on their recent cutting‑edge research by Dr. Kolas from the University of Tokyo, Professor Ryadnov from the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom, and Professor Matsuura from Tottori University.
