[2ASPR- ID-a]Introduction: Hybrid Artificial Photosynthesis for Energy Conversion and Bioproduction

This session presents cutting-edge research from the JST ASPIRE Japan–UK collaboration, which aims to develop a hybrid artificial photosynthesis platform integrating artificial and biological systems for energy conversion and material production. Building on a system established by Dr. Wei Huang that combines photocatalytic electrochemical platforms with microorganisms, the project advances this approach through interdisciplinary research.
Key efforts include the development of advanced photocatalytic nanomaterials, engineering of artificial photosynthesis-driven cellular systems, and rapid selection of high-performance cells using micro- and nanofluidic technologies. This symposium highlights selected progress in these areas.
Dr. Wei Huang will introduce system updates, including improvements to light-driven proton pumps. Dr. Glenn Quek will present advances in photocatalytic nanomaterials, while Dr. Hiroyuki Noji will discuss molecular machine engineering centered on ATP synthase. Dr. Sadao Ota will present innovations in cytometry for high-performance cell sorting.
This session is organized in conjunction with the GteX session at IBS2026 and highlights interdisciplinary approaches advancing next-generation biohybrid technologies.
