Climate change will expose major crops to a greater frequency and magnitude of biotic and abiotic stresses. The Center for Sustainable Plant Innovation and Resilience Through International Teamwork (C-SPIRIT) aims to identify novel bioactive compounds that strengthen crop resilience. Thankfully, the evolution of diverse organisms in countless ecological niches has created a broad spectrum of natural products (NPs) already custom tailored to aiding with various stressors. Commercially and community-sourced NP libraries and microbial extracts have been sourced and tested in several varying in vitro and in vivo assays to identify a range of bioactivities for these diverse NPs. Here, we highlight specific examples of our pipeline, such as the discovery of novel small molecule interactors of the glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and their role in modulating carbon and redox metabolism and consequently stress resilience.
