[2ASPR-21-2] Expanding Research Perspectives Through a Study Abroad Experience in Cell-Free Systems

[Overview] This presentation describes the insights gained from a six-month study abroad experience (July–December 2025) at Imperial College London in the laboratory of Professor Paul Freemont, undertaken as part of the ASPIRE project. The primary aim was to broaden my perspective on cell-free systems beyond my original research focus on their metabolic applications.[Experience] During the program, I was exposed to key challenges in the field, including ATP regeneration strategies, while working in an international research environment. I also worked to improving my academic English skills through university courses and e-learning. Interactions with researchers across Europe highlighted differences in research styles and the importance of proactive communication.[Insights] Through these experiences, I realized that research perspectives are shaped not only by technical expertise but also on collaboration among individuals with diverse backgrounds, and that effective communication does not require perfect English but rather a clear intention to convey ideas.[Career Impact] Although I did not ultimately pursue a research career, this experience has had a lasting impact on my career decisions. The importance of cross-cultural understanding, diversity, and communication extends beyond research and remains fundamental in any professional field.
