Biology is organized by energy flow in the form of electron transfer reactions. Within archaea, methanogenic and pathway related organisms form an interesting group to consider relationships in taxonomy, ecology, and pathway modularity. In this talk I’ll discuss some of the main levers which may contribute to pathway functioning, and some of the mechanics underlying this including elemental, enzymatic, and electronic. In addition to considering “metabolic-taxonomic” diversity, we’ll take a look into genetically identical yet physiologically unique cells which co-exist in the same environment. This observation of metabolic plasticity highlights a frontier research area of single-cell biology where we still lack understanding of general organizational principles, although it is likely a phenomenon fundamental in cellular biology.
