Bacteria produce and release a wide array of chemically diverse airborne molecules that can act as infochemicals in microbe-rich environments such as soils, biofilms, and host-associated microbiota. However, despite evidence of their biological relevance, bacterial volatile compounds are still frequently viewed merely as odors or environmental pollutants, and their direct roles in bacterial biology remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will show how the study of organic and inorganic volatile secondary metabolites emitted from bacterial biofilms not only reveals physiological adaptations associated with the biofilm lifestyle but also uncovers airborne bacterial interference mechanisms that shape intra- and inter-kingdom interactions.
