Comminuted fractures produce many small and irregular bone fragments which are difficult to reposition and stabilize using convectional fixation devices, especially when fragment size is below a few millimeters. We developed a bone adhesive tape composed of a composite hydrogel as the adhesive layer and a PLA fabric as the support layer in this research. The influence of hydrogel composition on gelation behavior and bone adhesion were evaluated to identify the formulation suitable for clinical surgeries. Gelation temperature and time were measured as indicators for material handling, and adhesion strength was tested using a 180° peel test under simulated physiological conditions (37 ℃, humid environment). Increasing the protein-based component and its mechanical characteristics significantly improved adhesion strength and reduced gelation time. Adding polysaccharide had little effect on short-term adhesion but improved the long-term structural stability. Current efforts are directed toward improving long-term stability and tissue integration of the hydrogel layer to further reinforce the bone–tape interface during surgery.
