Currently, human-mediated climate and environmental change are occurring worldwide. Many studies have shown that animal activity patterns can change in association with environmental change. Such changes in activity patterns can alter resource-use efficiencies and may affect animal community structures through changes in prey-predator interactions. Therefore, it's essential to monitor animal activity patterns in the natural environment. However, especially in aquatic environments, conventional methods struggle to capture animal activity patterns at high temporal resolution and are often not scalable.
To address these challenges, I used passive acoustic monitoring and environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches, which enable non-invasive, high-frequency biological monitoring. Passive acoustic monitoring can provide long-term biological information with high spatiotemporal resolution, while eDNA monitoring allows us to monitor multiple species simultaneously. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how these approaches can improve our understanding of animal activity patterns in natural environments, and I hope this presentation will spark your interest in these emerging methodologies.
