[Purpose]
Streptomyces is the largest genus of actinobacteria that produces numerous bioactive compounds, including antibiotics and anticancer agents. In this study, we analyzed the secondary metabolites produced by Streptomyces sp. RM001, isolated from the Indonesian ocean, with the aim of elucidating the mechanisms underlying their production.

[Method and Results]
To analyze the metabolites of the Indonesian actinomycete, strain RM001 was cultured in Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) medium, followed by ethyl acetate extraction, gel filtration chromatography, and silica gel column chromatography. Several metabolites were obtained and their structures were elucidated by ESI-MS and NMR. Two compounds termed as RM001-SO-1 and RM001-SO-2 were elucidated to be C13H22O3 and C12H20O3, both harboring a 4-monosubstituted butenolide skeleton. This skeleton is similar to avenolide, a signaling molecule known to regulate avermectin production in Streptomyces avermitilis, and it has been reported that this is biosynthesized by acyl-CoA oxidase (aco). Genomic analysis of the strain RM001 also confirmed the presence of a gene highly homologous to the aco gene of S. avermitilis. Therefore, it seems likely that RM001-SO-1 and 2 may act as signaling molecules for secondary-metabolites inducers in strain RM001. Details will be described in this paper.
