Rapid, affordable, and scalable diagnostics are essential to building resilient health systems in the pandemic era. This work demonstrates how translational biotechnology can reshape population health by integrating two next-generation platforms.
First, the RICCA (RNA Isothermal Co-assisted and Coupled Amplification) assay, a robust approach comparable to RT-PCR, simplifies molecular workflows while delivering sensitive, reliable detection in resource-limited settings. Through the optimization and freeze-drying of an engineered enzyme cocktail, this 15-minute assay operates at a constant 41°C. These room-temperature-storable kits are highly effective for the on-site molecular diagnosis of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, such as Tuberculosis.
Second, BioMuRun, representing the rebirth of gel electrophoresis, provides a portable, fast, and user-friendly separation technology optimized for point-of-care applications. Together, these systems modernize two foundational pillars of biotechnology, reducing costs while expanding access and surveillance capabilities. Case studies on the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 gene and the 85b gene for TB will highlight performance metrics, deployment lessons, and opportunities for localized manufacturing. The presentation outlines a strategic roadmap to integrate RICCA and BioMuRun into robotic ecosystems to enhance preparedness for Society 5.0.
