Atomistic tight-binding and many-body calculations show that semiconductor and bilayer graphene quantum dots realize synthetic spin-1 chains hosting the Haldane phase. The resulting gapped spectra and edge states enable quantum simulation of topological matter and implementations of protected qubits.
