GaAs:Er is investigated as a photon-ratchet intermediate-band solar cell material using photoluminescence and excitation spectroscopy, revealing long-lived Er 4f states, thermally activated quenching processes, and energy alignment consistent with a ratchet band enabling efficient carrier accumulation.
