Because of their heritage, digital planetariums are used primarily for education in astronomical, planetary, and other space topics. Yet, the flexibility of fulldome technology means that any disciplinary instruction that is visually intensive can be done inside a digital dome. In this presentation, I show the importance of field experiences in geology courses, and demonstrate how immersive virtual field trips (VFTs) can be implemented relatively inexpensively using camera and other capture technology available today. Photoreal media can be further augmented in the dome with data visualizations and other media illustrating geophysical concepts. In addition to providing a more equitable experience to those who are unable to go on a real field trip, dome VFTs are also more socially engaging than their counterparts in VR or desk- and laptop computers.
