In 1997, Discovery Park Yaizu opened the world’s first hybrid planetarium, capable of operating an optical-mechanical star projector and a digital projection system—manufactured by different companies—in perfect synchronization. This innovation combined the realism of optical star projection with the expressive power of digital imagery, presenting a new model for planetariums around the world.
This presentation introduces the background and development process of this pioneering system. Synchronizing two different technologies posed major challenges, but through collaboration among manufacturers, engineers, and planetarium staff, stable and precise operation was achieved. The result was a new form of dome presentation that integrated scientific accuracy with artistic storytelling.
For nearly 30 years since its opening, Discovery Park Yaizu has continued to evolve—upgrading its digital systems, enhancing interactivity, and creating original programs that connect education and culture. What was once an experimental approach has now become a global standard.
Finally, the presentation will explore the future of planetarium systems.
