Hosting a fulldome festival in Australia had been a long-held desire for the Melbourne Planetarium. Yet the small planetarium industry in Australia and our remote location, made this ambition seemingly impossible. So how did the Dome Under Film Festival come into being? And what where the events that led up to the inaugural DUFF in 2020? Beginning in 2010 the Melbourne Planetarium has partnered with the Melbourne International Film Festival, to present fulldome showcases, screening the best of fulldome cinema from around the world. This partnership led to the establishment of the hugely successful Planetarium Nights program in 2017 which further promotes the fulldome medium and enhances the Melbourne Planetarium’s network of fulldome artists, filmmakers and producers. This prompted the development of a standalone festival, but one that was open to and focused on a general public audience. Since our first festival in 2020, DUFF has gone from strength to strength. No longer an accident it has become a signature program of the Melbourne Planetarium and a major event in the Fulldome calendar.
