In planetariums, we present live commentary on the starry sky - but what if we could do the same for other subjects?
We’ve already shown 3D models of comming asteroids and spacecraft onto dome screens using digital planetarium features. However, this required complex workflows including 3D model preparation, installation work , and accounting for differences between systems.
To make it simple, I developed Amateras Model Viewer, a new free software tool that allows presenters to describe objects in planetariums more easily with immersive experience in domes and the appeal of interactive live commentary.
The most important aspect of this tool is that the people who know the subject best - not just planetarium presenters, but also museum curators in other fields and 3D creators - can operate it by themselves in domes. Regardless of the planetarium system and requiring no specialized knowledge, presenters can now bring it in on a laptop as easily as PowerPoint and deliver live commentary that takes full advantage of the dome environment.
