From the beginning of our museum opened in 1971, we have consistently held a concept of “science museum engaged with the public”.
We keep in mind the slogan by Mr. Wakamiya who was one of the first planetarium presenters and later became a director of our museum, “Not just looking at the Planetarium show but also operating the Planetarium by yourself”.
He encouraged people who were interested in planetarium and started workshops to involve them to museum activities. For our museum, citizens are great partners in learning together.
When the planetarium system was updated in 2012, the console was designed based on this concept. It features a wide space where 2 adults or 3 children can operate it together. Currently we have one-time workshops for elementary school students and adults, providing opportunities to learn about how planetarium works and operate the planetarium by themselves. We also have collaborations with groups such as a planetarium club with members of various ages and a high school astronomy club which is located nearby in the city. Both made a planetarium show at our museum by preparing the scenario and projection materials by themselves.
I will introduce the details of these activities and how we recently developed successful relationships with these groups.
