[SP-JP1-03]Exploring the Universe Together: NAOJ Science, Visualization, and Planetarium Collaboration
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan
The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) conducts a wide range of astronomical research, spanning optical, infrared, radio, and gravitational wave observations, solar physics, and theoretical astrophysics, using both ground-based telescopes, space missions, and advanced supercomputing through domestic facilities and international collaborations. Its two flagship facilities—the Subaru Telescope, an 8.2-meter optical–infrared telescope on Maunakea, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a world-leading radio interferometer in Chile—enable transformative studies of galaxies, black holes, star and planet formation across cosmic time.
In parallel, NAOJ develops approaches to connect science with society. The 4D2U project produces scientifically accurate 3D visualizations and the universe viewer “Mitaka,” based on data from both observations and simulations. These products demonstrate how research results can be translated into compelling dome content.
Many NAOJ-produced images, movies, and visualizations are available for educational use. This presentation invites collaboration with planetariums worldwide to share discoveries and inspire diverse audiences.
