Title: Integration of concepts with Active Magnetic Bearings to enhance rotor dynamic performance
Abstract: The keynote presentation will explore concepts to enhance rotor dynamic performance, ranging from controller designs together with other hardware adaptations involving Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB’s). For example, touch-down bearings with some active capability may have benefits for restoring contact-free levitation if AMB force capacity is exceeded. Most of the concepts are laboratory systems with experimental evidence of performance, potentially for commercial exploitation if costings are favorable. The main issue with AMB’s is the limited dynamic force capacity arising from amplifier power limitations and magnetic flux saturation. The presentation will lead into the developments that are being addressed by members of ISO/TC 108/SC 2/WG 7, which sets the international standards for AMB equipped rotating machines.
