Title: Magnetic levitation technology for mechanical circulatory support
Abstract: The blood pump for long-term use must ensure blood compatibility, such as the prevention of hemolysis and thrombogenicity induced by shear stress and biological reactions. The magnetic levitation technology for the blood pump can promise better blood compatibility due to the wide blood gap between the levitated and rotated impeller and the casing, as well as improved durability with a non-contact mechanism. Miniaturization of the device and minimization of heat generation are key and interesting research points to developing maglev motors for implantable devices, such as the ventricular assist device or total artificial heart. An implantable pediatric ventricular assist device with a self-bearing motor and a total artificial heart with a magnetic bearing will be introduced in the keynote session.
