Natural minerals of apatite and merrillite act as the host crystals for the rare earth elements. Recently, we have synthesized the compound Ca9Ce(PO4)7 by using solid state reaction. The measurements of photoluminescence and XAFS clearly indicate that the included Ce is trivalent state. In addition, as a result of single crystal structure analysis, the merrillite-type structure Ca9Ce(PO4)7 (R3c; a=10.500 (2), c=7.564 (4)) was confirmed.
