By using the cation exchange selectivity coefficient of saponite from the interlayer cation composition of saponite, it is possible to constrain the water quality of the pore water that was once in contact with it. In this study, the cation selectivity coefficients of saponite are experimentally determined and compared with those of smectite, which have been reported. The obtained selectivity coefficients were predominantly lower than those of previous studies, suggesting that saponite may not be able to exchange interlayer cations easily.
