Billets were fabricated from an Al-6.4mass% Si alloy by slope casting process. The initial primary crystals exhibited solidification segregation near the grain boundaries. In-situ observation of the melting behavior showed that the segregated regions melted simultaneously with the eutectic phase at temperatures below the eutectic temperature.
