Bi addition increased the hardness of β-Sn through solid solution strengthening. In hypoeutectic Sn-Bi alloys, the primary β-Sn phase was harder than the Bi eutectic phase. Hardness decreased after cold rolling and increased after heat treatment, indicating that solid solution strengthening by Bi is the main factor for hardness improvement.
