In catalytic reactions involving multiple substrates, a strongly adsorbed substrate acts as a catalyst poison, thereby inhibiting the reaction. As for exhaust gas purification, such as TWC, oxidation activity is dominated by competitive adsorption of oxygen and CO or hydrocarbons. On base metal catalysts, strong adsorption of partially oxidized hydrocarbons inhibits NO adsorption, suppressing NO reduction activity. By clarifying the behavior of competitive adsorption of multiple substrates, it is possible to design a Pt single-atom catalyst having CO oxidation activity at 0 C and PGM-free TWC systems.
