The removal of mercury using activated carbon was investigated. The amount of mercury adsorbed from petroleum increased with the amount of acidic functional groups on the activated carbon surface. DFT calculations revealed strong interactions between mercury and carboxyl groups on the activated carbon surface. A model adsorbent was prepared by selectively introducing carboxyl groups onto a silica surface. Mercury adsorption measurements using model adsorbent showed that the amount of mercury adsorbed increased with the amount of carboxyl groups, supporting the results of the DFT calculations.
