In today’s increasingly digital society, sustaining and advancing democracy requires that data related to government administration and local communities be available for analysis. At the same time, it is desirable for such analysis to be feasible not only for administrative bodies but also at the individual level; however, this is not easy, as it often requires specialized knowledge and advanced analytical skills. This study focuses on ChatGPT, a type of AI chatbot, as an analytical tool that complements knowledge and analytical capabilities. As analytical data, municipalities with more direct democratic systems are examined, using the dashboards and data catalog for “Economy and Finance” and “Population and Living (by municipality)” on the Japan Dashboard published by the Digital Agency of Japan. To examine whether it is possible to analyze multiple indicators for a place of residence, or to conduct comparable analyses across neighboring municipalities, data output for a single municipality and for multiple municipalities were input to ChatGPT for organization and analysis. In particular, the analysis focused on year-to-year changes in total expenditure and per-capita expenditure for “Expenditures (by nature)” within local public finance.
