Si photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) optical modulators reduce VπL to about 1/10 of ribbed-type modulators due to the slow light enhancement, and achieve small footprint and low capacitance. In this study, distributed electrodes were introduced into Si PCW optical modulators, and 64-Gbaud high-speed operation, 0.87-V driving voltage, 59-fJ/bit power efficiency, and 0.3-mm2 footprint were demonstrated.
